I grew up in the 50's & 60's in the River Park area of South Bend, IN.

In those days, Beggars' Night was the night beforeHalloween, which would be

Oct. 30th, as Halloween was always observed on the 31st in those days.

The reason it was called beggars night was because kids actually showed up

that evening before Halloween and "begged" for candy a day early. Most people

didn't give them anything. My mom always answered the door and told the kids to

come back the next evening.

This is what I grew up thinking beggar's night was, but there is nothing written about

it in this way. My mom always referred to them as 'those little rotters"

Does anyone else remember it this way?
