There are no plans for a season 3. They struggled so hard to create season 2 that they feel it unlikely that season three will ever happen.
Personally , the only viable option I feel they have is to take their knowledge of their time in England and create their next season from their experiences here.
Apparantly they have two whole albums of half songs that will never quite be good enough to make the grade.

"When they're ready, we're ready," Plepler smiled.HBO President Michael Lombardo added that both Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement not only have to pull together to write a season of episodes, but also write an album's worth of music. "We've told them that we're ready to go for a third season," Lombardo stated - which now places the ball squarely in the Conchords' court as we await their creative genius.
That is a direct quote from the co-president of HBO. So yes actually there are plans but as for a release date it stands to be known.
Research is one thing, misunderstanding the statement is quite another. The original answer is quite correct. The plans for season 3 are wishes from the TV company. Brett & Jermaine in the fortunate position of having a product that would be really easy to sell, but the manufacture of it is hazardous and not something that will easily come to fruition.
