Who was Persephone and why did she eat pomegranets?
Persephone is the goddess of spring. Hades wanted to trick her into coming to the Underworld with him forever. Hades kidnapped her from her mother Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, and took her to the Underworld. If she ate anything there, she would be trapped there forever. Before Zeus sent Hermes to retrive her, Hades tricked Persephone into eating four or five pomegranate seeds. This allowed her to return to the Overworld, but in 4 or 5 months time, she would have to return the the Underworld. That is the connection between the Greek myths and the seasons.
Why is Hades so important to Greek mythology?
Hades is the Lord of the Underworld, though not death itself. Without him, the Underworld would be in chaos because there would be no one to watch over it and keep order. He kidnapped Persephone, and her mother, Demeter, refused to let the earth grow, so he also caused winter. The seasons only change if Persephone is coming back from the underworld and when she is going back to the underworld.
