To find a shorter route from Europe to Asia through the Arctic Ocean.
On his fourth Arctic expedition, his ship became trapped in the ice but was eventually freed. In June of 1611, as he sought to continue his search for the Northwest Passage, his crew mutinied. Hudson, his son, his wife, and some others were set adrift in a small rowboat and were never seen again.
He discovered it in 1610.1610On his final voyage to North America, Henry Hudson sailed into Hudson Bay on August 2, 1610.(After exploring the bay, he found his ship blocked by ice and was trapped there until the sping of 1611. His crew mutinied and Hudson, his son, and some men were set adrift in a small boat. None were ever seen again.)

the discovery
All explorers' ships were 'trapped in ice' during Antarctica's winter. The period was generally for weeks between about February and about November, depending on the location of the ship.
The famous explorer was Ernest H Shackleton and his ship was called the discovery
Ice is bigger than they are. Ice can cut holes in the side of ships, causing them to sink, i.e. Titanic. Getting trapped in ice can lead to the crushing of the hull, eliminating bouyancy and sinking it. A trapped ship can run out of fuel, water, and food, resulting in a dead crew. Ice can clog intake lines, eliminating cooling water to engines, destroying the engine and leaving the ship free floating. Ice on the topside of a ship increases surface area, slowing the vessel down and making it heel more in the wind. The additional weight can make the vessel top heavy and it could capsize.
he found the northwest passagehe and his crew got blocked by ice in the Hudson bay, they mutinied against him, leaving him his son and 7 loyal crew mates on a boat to die.
It was the ill fated ship that was trapped in the Weddell Sea by ice flows, and ultimately, sank. The crew remained stranded in the Antarctic for two years. Fascinating story of survival.
