ITV was the first commercial channel and relied on advertising income for funding. The next channel to be launched was Channel 4. Channel 4 is a publicly owned and was supported by a variety of funding routes. Despite the public funding, it still carried commercials from the time it was launched. Channel 4 has always been regarded as a public service network and relied on funding in addition to its own advertising revenue. If one counts partially commercial channels, then Channel 4 was the second. Channel 5 was the next commercial channel and was privately funded from the start. It was the second fully commercial channel to be launched.
