In traditiional African society, drums are not just for music. As in many cultures, they have shamanic properties, and are played in ensembles at cult rituals to work dancers and worshippers into a frenzy. This is the direct ancestor to the lights-and-music shows used by Pentecostal christian movements to create the required atmosphere. Drums also had a role in long-distance communication. Certain rhythms are used at certain events, and, since the sound of a drum can carry for miles across the savannah, nearby tribes know exactly when there is a wedding, healing, funeral, coming-of-age or any other ceremony happening.
