Beowulf's literature has made the context completely detailed and the movie as well. The essence of the literature and the movie implie that war is the way of life before. Warriors have to fight many times because they are the most important of human beings in a place. Greedy of Grendel exists as Beowulf becomes hero.
In the epic Beowulf is victorious against Grendel and his mother. In the movie he is not.
