The idea of powered flight was not invented in New Zealand. However it is claimed Richard William Pearse a New Zealand farmer flew and landed a powered heavier-than-air machine on 31 March 1903, nine months before the Wright brothers flew and landed their aircraft. Verifiable eyewitnesses describe Pearse crashing into a hedge on two separate occasions during 1903. His monoplane must have risen to a height of at least three metres on each occasion and on 31 March 1903 he achieved a powered but poorly controlled flight of several hundred metres. Pearse was not a publicity-seeker so a lot of his work remained poorly documented at the time. Hi aircraft bore a remarkable resemblance to a modern microlight aircraft.
