Audio Units virtual synthesizers are available in commercial (paid) titles and a few free ones. I assume you have tried to work with Ultrabeat, the beat creation plug-in that comes with Logic Pro 8 and 9. If this one doesn't work for you, you should try MOTU's BPM or Native Instruments' Battery.

Garageband is your own music. You are making your own music. If you mean someone else's music, you can copy music from Itunes when you create a new song. Select + (Create new song) and then Copy from iTunes at the Song selection page.
Just google free vst plugin, there are many, though I have downloaded a few as part of making dubstep, techno music for PumpYouUp.com and none were really worth the effort and generally worse quality than free synths or effects that come with most music software/soundcards. Sylenth and/or Massive is likely what you want, they are a bit of money but well worth it.

GarageBand has many built-in instruments and effects. Unfortunately, it's only for the Mac. Try getting an electronic keyboard.
try tux guitar. you can make any beat, no matter how complicated, and export it as a midi file to garageband. also, its free
Add a Software Instrument track. Making sure the edit pane on the right is open, click the Edit tab. Under Sound Generator, click and hold the Piano synth engine. Massiv will be listed under Garageband's synth engines under Audio Unit Modules.
