Since South Africa has an English heritage. I would go with traditional English Christmas carols.
We sing the usual Christmas carols like Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, For Unto Us A Child Is Born. New Zealand does have its own Christmas song which is about the Pohutukawa tree which flowers at Christmas. The song is 'New Zealand's Christmas Tree' and it was originally sung by Daphne Walker. Thanks Tamanui, that's true. And then we have our version of On The First day of Christmas- On the First Day of Christmas my true love gave to me ...a pukeko in a punga tree ..... and so on and Te Harinui which starts "Not on a snowy night..."

Christmas carols are songs sung at Christmas that you hear in churches. Away in a Manger is a carol. It came Upon a Midnight Clear, and Silent Night would also be Christmas carols.
Carols were first sung in Europe, thousands of years ago, but they weren't Christmas carols, they were pagan songs sung at the winter solstice celebrations whilst people danced round stone circles.
i have read many Xmas story's. In some of them they sung but i would say all of them have at least one song.
