Always, always pay attention to your belongings - as you should do in any prime tourist location. Don't leave ANYthing anywhere. Pickpocketters are a'plenty. First, leave the precious things you don't need for the day, at the hotel desk. They will be responsible for it and you can trust them for keeping your stuff safe (remember that the rooms are NOT a safe place to leave precious things during the day). It could be good too to get a money belt or a neck pouch so that your belongings would be hidden. Tourists displaying obviously their belongings are an attractive and sometimes easy target for thieves. Think than in most countries the cell phones that are stolen were in the hand of their owner, not hidden in their pocket.

You ough to especially pay attention to your things especially at the metros and crowded places. You'd be surprised how cunning these thieves are. There is a chance that you are traveling in groups too so just ask your fellow travelers to keep an eye on you, and do the same for you.

A lot of times they'll be working in pairs, like making a distraction then the other is behind you and snatches your stuff. Even little kids know how to swiftly take your stuff, so watch out for them too. In several stories people say that somebody will pick up a gold ring and ask if it's yours; it's just a distraction- before you know it your personal things are gone. The chance of being targeted is small, but smaller even if you do not trust anybody blindingly. If you feel uncomfortable with people pretending to ask their way or begging for change just dismiss them with the back of the hand as Parisians do.

The city itself has a noticeable police presence. It isn't known for much violence.

Walk as much as possible.

Buy metro/bus tickets in 19s, it's much cheaper; ask for a CARNET.

Take a small backpack, then you can buy your refreshments in advance at a local supermarket. A glass of soda in a café costs more than a 2-litre bottle in a supermarket. Bread from the baker's and cheese or ham from the supermarket will cost far less than a sandwich from a street stall.

When walking, look UP as well as around. Often a banal shopfront is only the bottom layer of a wonderful building.

Most museums have a free day, usually Sunday, and a closed day, usually Tuesday.
