Ashley told Scarlett, who was vigorously pursuing him, that he could not betray the best wife a man had ever had, and he would go up north to work in a bank. Scarlett did not approve of that and so she apologized for throwing herself at him.
Ashley asked Scarett to take care of Melanie, which was a dangerous undertaking, considering that Melanie had just delivered a baby, and she shaking of the dilapidated wagon was enough to make Melanie faint, on the way back to Tara. However, since Atlanta was under seige by Sherman, there was no choice.
Sherman cut a wide swathe from Atlanta to St. Augustine, burning everything in his path, including livestock, crops and other food that would have been of great benefit to the widows and lone women who desperately needed such food. Following this brave act on the part of an apparentl arsonist, Sherman opined, "War is Hell." He should know.
