Various Maori tribes have their own traditions as to there their ancestral waka landed.
The earliest dated sites of occupation are both from the South island, one at Wairau Bar in Marlbrough, and one at the mouth of the Waihemo River (Shag River) in north Otago. Both date from the 1300s.
But there may well have been earlier sites elsewhere, since lost due to coastal erosion, or by being covered by volcanic or other debris. Yet awaiting discovery.
