It is not necessarily a myth. Watching a bright screen for any amount of time in a dark room can cause disorientation when you look away from the screen or enter a better lit area. Your eyes will readjust to the new lighting after a few moments and shouldn't leave any lasting damage. That is where the general idea comes from.
