The name "Emmy" was decided in 1948. Academy founder Syd Cassyd originally suggested "Ike", based on the television iconoscope tube. However, "Ike" also referred to the popular World War II hero Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower, and other Academy members wanted something unique. Eventually, the name "Immy" was suggested by television engineer and the third academy president Harry Lubcke. "Immy", refers to the image orthicon tube used in the early cameras. After "Immy" was chosen, it was later feminized to Emmy to match their female statuette.
