I'm not up to date what concerns the structure of school systems of those days in France... it seems that whoever had money sent the children to a collegium academiae... what is known as college (collège or lycée in France) - but it can't really be compared.

Victor Hugo was born in 1802 and in 1809 attended the lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. Later he is listed among the student of the famous Sorbonne (Paris) University.
