Once you get the iron island egg in Pokemon diamond/pearl, you can go anywhere you want to in order to get the egg to hatch. But in the walkthrough it tells you to battle Byron (if you already haven't), and then your rival will come to you and say that professor Rowan wants to see you at the Canalave library. The story will progress regularly if you do as everyone hints you to do.
