You would need permission from the rightsholder to create the derivative work (the play itself), as well as permission to perform it unless the performance is specifically for purposes of instruction.
I can't say I have an answer for you on this as the "Red Shoes" has been historically tight on rights acquisition. I would start with asking the Criterion Collection DVD makers where you should begin. They certainly had to acquire the rights themselves before issuing their releaseo f the film.
