If you lift the hood, remove the air box (disconnecting the inlet air temp and MAF) and look straight down onto the motor you will see the water temp sensor that is the one that controls the cold engine start. The coolant sensor the controls the gauge is inside and you have to remove the engine cowl

Sounds like your coolant is low or your coolant level sensor could be sticking closed after the coolant was low. with the dexcool coolant it becomes thick and cause the sensor to stick closed.
It could possibly be the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor (CHTS) which monitors the temperature of the coolant/water circulating through the cylinder head, and tells the computer to increase or decrease the injector spray length. Warmer temperatures = shorter sprays of fuel from injectors, and vice versa. -Anthony C.
The 2003 Mondeo does not have a IAT Sensor is has a Temperature and Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (TMAP) The TMAP sensor fits directly into the inlet manifold and accurately measures the vacuum from the engine. The TMAP sensor consists of a temperature sensor and a pressure transducer and therefore replaces the IAT and the MAP sensors. The TMAP sensor provides the powertrain control module with information relating to inlet manifold vacuum and barometric pressure along with the temperature of the air in the inlet manifold. With the ignition on but without the engine running the sensor reads barometric pressure and when the engine is running, the sensor reads inlet manifold vacuum.
The temperature sensor provides feedback to the charger to allow the charger to determine when the battery is fully charged. The battery under charge develops internal heat as it approaches full charge. The temperature sensor measures the heat (temperature) and reports it back to the charger to end the charging cycle.

The 2006 Honda Civic coolant temperature sensor is located on the front of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor will be in the vicinity of the thermostat housing.
cougar 99 where is coolant temperature sensor
Coolant temperature sensor is located on the front of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor is a few inches above the thermostat housing.
If you have a 1999 Passat V6, the coolant temperature sensor is located in the lower radiator hose.
The coolant temperature sensor on a 2005 Dodge Neon is located on the cylinder head. It is close to the camshaft position sensor.
The coolant temperature sensor, on your 2002 Nissan, is located on the front of the engine. The sensor is just above the water pump.
The temperature sensor for the coolant system is located on the front of the engine. The exact location of the coolant temperature sensor is dependent upon the year of the engine.
Where is the temperature cooling sensor located
The Engine coolant temperature sensor is installed in a coolant passage which is located at the front left cornerof the cylinder head.
The coolant temperature sensor is located under the hood of the car. The sensor is located to the left of the brake booster at the rear of the engine.Ê
coolant temperature sensor are located where the coolant runs in the block near the thermostat housing normally the connector are on top of the sensor and the sensor itself screws in with a deep socket. The temperature sensor is usaully located where the coolant runs OUT of the engine close to thermostat housing.
