New France was the widespread area colonized by France in North America beginning in the 1500s. The territory of New France extended from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. It included the Mississippi Valley and the St. Lawrence valley. The area was divided into five territories: Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland and Louisiana.
Samuel de Champlain reached the New World in 1604 and named the first point of land they saw "First Point" in what is now Nova Scotia. This was the site of the first capital in New France.
