In imperial Russia there were very strict family, separation and divorce laws, giving the husband almost limitless power over his wife and children. Although separations between man and woman were not uncommon, a legal divorce could only be had by permission of the Tsar himself, through a request to be sent to the Chancellery for Receipt of Petitions. The grounds for divorce were very limited, and certainly women would have a very hard time getting one.
