Where was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory set?

The setting is Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, sometime after 1950 (the book was written in 1964). Television is a novel new concept in the first film, but the second film in 2005 references Video Games.

Charlie was supposed to live in England, and you'll notice that the majority of characters around him have British accents. They make a point of saying that Violet and Mike are from the United States.
