Yes, the famous Scarlet and Rhett staircase scene did take place at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA.

I happened to stay at the Jefferson Hotel in VA a number of years back. The hotel was recommend by a local of the area and I was faithfully informed that filming was taken at the location.

What did I do when I saw the staircase? Ran up and down and up and down the staircase calling Rhett. He didn't answer (smiles).

Incidentally, although the staircase beautiful in craftsmanship, isn't that big.

UPDATED ANSWER!!! No the filming was not done at the Jefferson Hotel. Urban legend states that the staircase was merely fashioned after the jefferson.

What movie was filmed in Charleston South Carolina in 1953?

I'm sorry to report that there is no listing for a 1953 movie filmed in Charleston, SC. according to SC film websites. Of course, there are the legends of parts of Gone With the Wind (1939) being filmed on the Battery and Boone Hall, but even that is a lie as supported by the film's production notes. GWTW was entirely produced in California.1941/42: Reap the Wild Wind (John Wayne) was filmed in Charleston.1959: Thunder in Carolina (Rory Calhoun) was filmed in Charleston
