Because Christmas isn't about presents and food, it is about celebrating life and togetherness, and the birth of Christ.

The presents in the little girl house
The Grinch rides into town and steals things from people's homes. Then he rides to the top of Mount Crumpet to dump it all. Then the Whos celebrate Christmas anyway by singing even though they have no presents. Then, the Grinch changes his mind (and heart), and comes down to bring everything back. After he arrives, they have a feast. Pick three.
He almost but then returned all of the presents.

The grinch realizes that Christmas is not about presents, that it is about family and shearling. Because of this the grinch a heart grew 3 sizes and he carved the Christmas ham.
He stole Christmas - or at least he tried to. The Grinch tried to steal Christmas by disguising himself as Santa Claus and taking away all of the Who's Christmas presents and decorations. However, when in the end of the book, the Who's start singing their annual Christmas song despite the fact that all of their presents have been stolen by the Grinch, the Grinch sees that it isn't the presents that make Christmas Christmas - it's the spirit of the people. At this point, his heart grows about three sizes and he becomes a good Grinch and brings back all of the presents to the Whos, and is welcomed for Christmas dinner - and gets to carve the roast beast.
