If you're referring to the Michael Crichton novel ("Timeline" - which is a very entertaining novel and very lame movie) then the answer is that it is based off of the area of Castelnaud, La Roque, Beynac, Sarlat, Dom. It's a beautiful place. I highly recommend a visit. When I visited "Castelnaud" they explained that it was used by the British in the 100 year war (just as Crichton depicted).
