She was built at the Harland & Wolff shipyards in Belfast, Northern Ireland- the dock in which she was constructed still exists.
It took kust over 2 years to build her- her keel was laid down on the 31st March 1909, and she was launched on 31st May 1911. Fitting her out and sea trials took a further 11 months- she was finally ready for service on 2nd April 1912.
She sank only a fortnight later.
