The rudder was too small for such a large ship, and therefore, the Titanic could not change directions to get away from the iceburg in time. This is one theory of what went wrong. You can always just use Wikipedia and look up "RMS Titanic" it should really help with any questions you have.

They saw the iceberg coming straight in front of them, and the first-in-command decided to stupidly turn, which didn't work at all, and resulted in the compartments being flooded. If the Titanic hadn't been turned, and hit the iceberg straight on, it wouldn't have sank, because only 1 compartment would have been flooded, they could have closed it off, and they all would have been fine.
