Thomas Jefferson was elected in 1800 despite a tie vote in the electoral college.

His running mate, Aaron Burr got the same number of votes and Burr apparently saw a chance to be president despite his agreement to run for vice president.

The House gave the election to Jefferson after much debate. ( The 12th amendment was soon added to the Constitution to prevent an recurrence of this kind of thing.)

  • Aside from the 1824 presidential election, in which nobody received the votes of more than 50% of the electors, and the House of Representatives elected a candidate who received neither the most popular votes nor the most electoral votes, the 1860 election was the only other US presidential election in which the winner had less than 40% of nationwide popular votes.
  • It was the second US presidential election with a candidate from the Republican Party and the first time the Republican candidate won.
  • The Democratic Party had two nominees, Sen. Douglas from the north and Vice President Breckinridge from the south.
  • It was the 19th US presidential election.
  • It was the only US presidential election during the 19th century in which the incumbent Vice President lost.
  • Two of the candidates, Lincoln and Douglas, were opponents two years earlier for the position of US Senator from Illinois.
  • Abraham Lincoln and his running mate, Hannibal Hamlin, won the election with 59.4% of electoral votes.
