With the presence of this element, along with the proximity to the gas giant Polyphemus, the planet Pandora orbits, and the interaction of their respective magnetic fields, Pandora is home to erratic and intense magnetic field activity. The Hallelujah Mountains themselves are thought to be volcanic rock that was repelled from the surface by very high amounts of magnetic field activity, and cooled in midair. The chunks themselves are rich in Unobtainium and are constantly caught in a magnetic flux between the field from the Unobtainium in the craters on the surface and the mutual magnetic repulsion of the Unobtainium within the broken away pieces. This causes them to hover in midair.
