Most onyx specimens contain bands of black and white, possibly with some shades of bluish-grey. The type of onyx called sardonyx features mostly red and yellow bands in various shades. Black onyx, although mostly black, also contains bands of various colors. Commercially available "black" onyx is often artificially colored.
Light is reflected internally off ice crystals, and cannot escape the cloud.

Intrusive rock normally has visible crystals. Extrusive igneous rock has small crystals. A black extrusive igneous rock with small crystals could be basalt.

It's called mimicry. Some non-venomous species adopt similar colour patterns to venomous species. A typical example would be certain members of the (harmless) Milk snake family. They have bands of red, yellow and black colouration arranged in a similar pattern to that of a (venomous) Coral snake. The only difference, is the order the bands are arranged.
