Volts are used to measure electrical pressure. When a light bulb or something is connected then electrons from the Zn electrode have a path to go to the graphite electrode. The graphite is willing to give electrons to MnO2 because it can get them back from the Zn through the circuit. Also when the Zn electrode loses 2 electrons a Zn atom turns into an ion and dissolves in the electrolyte. Because of its positive charge it is attracted to the correspondingly formed negative charge at the graphite when MnO2 took an electron.
