I don't believe they are constructed for that use as in one direction you should get a flat almost seemless look and feel. in this state it gives a seal away from heat, cold, and moisture. The oposite direction almost negates it's function but can be considered for venting air. I would think the direction the blades were facing would be the determining factor of it's use. Warm air rises and cool air drops, so depending on what direction you want the air to flow will determine the direction of the blades. As for overall efficiency closing them so they contour into each other would be the optimal for cool or warm. I hope this helps.
