First millennium BC.

Based upon historical records that is more or less true. In between the periods of 950 BC until the Alexander's conquest near Indus river at or around 326 BC Magadha Dynasties were predominantly Hindu based and welcomed open debates and challenges to the beliefs of vedas [Although like any other civilization had its reservations of not questioning the ruling empire]. During this period vedic knowledge or transcripts were freely and fiercely debated in the oldest known universities to man kind of Takshila and Nalanda. During the rise of Mauryan Empire [Chandragupta and Bimbisara were firm believers of vedas. Bimbisara is sometimes debated to be a believer of Jainism] the Hinduism reached its peek until new religions like Budhisim and Jainism which spawned around 500 BC, out of Hinduism, preaching more or less the same Hindu philosphy's of Moksha and Dharma gained its support in Ashoka the Great

Ashoka the great after the battle of kalinga was transformed and sent emissaries to neighbouring regions to popularize budhism. Hinduism, Budhism and Jainism then grew side by side for next 2 milleniums.

Hindu religion finally saw its greatest growth only after Mughals and British empires were defeated or left Indian sub continent.

Since then Hinduism has grown to be the 3rd largest religion and the only religion surviving more than 5000 years [could be even more] of beliefs and transcripts. No religion has survived an onslaught of another religion or empire and survived for so long.

Currently almost 1 Billion people are considered to be hindus and hence some may argue if size is to be considered then current time may be the golden age of Hinduism.
