He recalls stealing her chocolate ration and running away across wasteland with his mother calling after him to give the chocolate back- when he returns home, his mother has disappeared and his baby sister's corpse is in her pram being devoured by rats, which accounts for his terror of them. It's not known what became of his mother, but it's assumed that she is either arrested and shot for some reason, or is killed by accident in crossfire.
