Kannassa poets were three well-known poets that lived between AD 1350 and 1450. They were Madhava Panikkar, Sankara Panikkar and Rama Panikkar of the Kannassa family. The first two were uncles of Rama Panikkar. They were instrumental in the development of modern Malayalam-language. Their major literary contributions are Kannassa Ramayanam and kannassa Bharatham. Kannassan panikkan or Kannassa Panacker are also known as Niranam poets, because they lived in a small village known by the name "Niranam'', near the towns of Tiruvalla and Mannar, situated in the Kuttanadu region of central Travancore in Kerala. Kannassan poets were members of an ancient family of traditional astrologers commonly known as Kaniyan (Kanisan or Ganaka).
