A section of the Bay Bridge collapsed during the earthquake that shook northern California at 5:04pm on October 17, 1989. The earthquake hit during the "Battle of the Bay," a rare World Series game between the neighboring San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's. The bridge section that collapsed was on the west-bound top level, but because it fell onto the bottom (east-bound) level, many baseball fans and commuters were stuck in San Francisco that night. The Bay Bridge was closed for a month of repairs, after which it reopened with one section of cleaner, brighter pavement. The 1989 San Francisco earthquake measured from 6.9 to 7.1 on the Richter scale.
