The Munchkins may have had a larger impact on viewers of the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz' than on readers of the original 1900 book edition. That impact was due to the smoothly coordinated design work of a number of collaborating experts. For example, Munchkin makeup was designed and supervised by Jack Dawn [February 10, 1892-June 20, 1961]. Yards and yards of felt material were worked into Munchkin outfits by costume designer Adrian Adolph Greenberg ka Gilbert Adrian [March 3, 1903-September 13, 1959]. The high-pitched Munchkin speech was achieved by running the tape at slow speed during the recording and playing back at normal speed for the final sound. The technique was the masterpiece of vocal arranger, conductor and composer Ken Darby [March 13, 1909-January 24, 1992]. Munchkin sets were designed under the artistic directions of William A. Horning[November 9, 1904-March 2, 1959] and Jack Martin Smith[1911-1993].
