He tells the gentleman on the bus bench about his million dollar wound and being wounded in the buttocks and the only good thin about it was all the ice cream he could eat. Later, he is being awarded the medal of honour from President Lyndon Johnson. "That must be a site, I would like to see that."
There are many histoical events within the movie such as: The US Presidents, the Viet Nam War, the opening of relations to mainland China, civil rights activism, the computer age. All of these are historical facts. Actor Tom Hanks would not accept the role of Gump unless the historical events were accurate.
There actually is no song playing when Forrest is shot. The song "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield plays when they are walking in the jungle in the rain, and when the rain stops, the song stops, and then they get attacked. There isn't another song until the next scene.
William Tell.
The movie does not tell us definitively how many times Forrest crossed America. When he set out from his home in Alabama, he headed west - the first coast he reached was the west coast (as evidenced by his arrival at the Santa Monica pier.) He was then shown arriving at what is presumed to be the east coast. From there, the journey is shown in a musical montage. At one point, a TV news anchor introduces a story saying that "for more than two years now, a man named Forrest Gump…has been running across America." The reporter covering the story goes on to say, "for the fourth time on his journey across America, Forrest Gump…is about to cross the Mississippi River again today." Forrest kept on running after that crossing, eventually stopping in the desert. At that point he stated, "I had run for three years, two months, fourteen days and sixteen hours."
