Who dies at the end of west side story?

At the end of the movie it shows everyone leaving after Maria yells at the sharks and the jets because the gangs are to blame for Tony's death. She leaves first and the gangs follow, it doesn't show her commiting suicide but she may have after the movie ended. I doubt it though.

It's because West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet are two quite different stories, although they share certain themes and plot elements. Indeed at an early stage of writing the writers of West Side Story closely followed Shakespeare's plot, but very quickly started removing plot points and characters and adding new ones, thus changing it into a very different story. There are two main reasons for this.First, the writers of West Side Story wanted to write a story about contemporary USA. Thus family loyalty, the social force that keeps Romeo and Juliet apart, disappears. We hear nothing about Tony's or Maria's family. The social force that keeps them apart is allegiance to street gangs. The street gangs were a later addition to the script, being topical, but the family feud was written out very early in the process, to be replaced by the much more typically American racial and cultural tensions in a country full of different kinds of immigrants. Romanticised suicide, a part of Shakespeare's culture, was not in any way a part of American culture. Tony therefore cannot die by his own hand like Romeo does, but has to be murdered by someone with a gun and not much between his ears, a more familiar idea to Americans. For the same reason Maria cannot be a suicide. Second, just as Shakespeare wrote plays which he knew would go over well in the Globe Theatre performed by The Lord Chamberlain's Men, so Bernstein, Sondheim et al were conscious of their audience: people who attended Broadway musicals like Oklahoma and State Fair. The writing process consisted of a constant pressure to make the story nicer, lighter and funnier so as to conform to the traditions of the Broadway stage, with some of the writers resisting to try to keep the dark and tragic tone of the story they had started with. Thus Juliet's faked death, with the intense grief of her parents and household, is removed and Tony gets the idea that Maria is dead from a spiteful lie told him by the character Anita. It was bad enough that the hero should be dead at the end of the play, but two deaths was too much, so Maria survives. Even so, the writers of the musical had a terrible time finding someone who would agree to produce it, because even with all their efforts to lighten the tone it was still too dark.Although the events in the first Act of West Side Story have many parallels to those in Romeo and Juliet, the second Act has very few correspondences. Romeo believes Juliet is dead because he is told so by Balthazar, who believes it; Tony believes Maria is dead because he is told so by Anita, who is lying. Romeo dies, having poisoned himself; Tony dies, being shot by one of the other gang. That is about all there is for parallels. It is in comparing these parts of the stories that you realize that, as a result of the writing process in West Side Story, the stories are quite distinctly different.
