Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. Following this was the crucial end to the Apartheid laws.
Apartheid was conceived because the South African Nationalist Party and the Afrikaaner Broederbond secret society wanted to follow the principles of Nazi Germany and make whites the 'master race' and all other races inferior. Don't be fooled into thinking this was a black/white issue - it was not . There were about 16 racial groups and White Afrikaaner was the top one.
It was the collective effort of anti apartheid activists and the help from the president of the country, FW de Klerk.
Nelson Mandela changed this aparthied when becoming president of South Africa. He lead people of all races to believe in themselves and he created equality.
