When John I died and Henry's oldest brother Duarte became the head of the castle's council, Henry got a huge margin of the profit. He mainly financed himself, but he also held some monopolies on the Algarve. When Duarte died, he got richer. Henry first sponsored some exploration expeditions, later employed cartographers, etc. He was rich enough to do the stuff he wanted without other's help, although he was interested in the profits from his voyages...evidence from that can be gathered by in that in 1444, the first African slave sale in Lagos, which he received profits from the merchants in the fifth part. That voyage I believe was sponsored by the ship owners themselves.
