The foundation of the city of bordeaux is not documented. Archeology suggest that it was founded in the 5th century BC. There are two hypothesis: it could have been part of the territory of the Gaulish tribe of the Santons (Latin: Santones), or part of the territory of the Bituriges (the 'kings of the world') who came at a later date, possibly around the Roman conquest (1st century BC). What is certain is that it gained much importance under the Roman rule.
