Through out a region called Rupert's Land which they owned. It covered all the coast of Hudson Bay and as far inland as the Western Mountains. Of course they had forts and trading posts in many other areas but only in their land could they hold a monopoly...until some Canadians started to cut into the action, making it clear you can claim anything you want but it isn't yours if you cannot control it militarily.
