The most successful director is Steven Spielberg: he earns over $300,000,000 yearly from his efforts not only as a director but as a producer and writer as well. Success does not always go with talent; it does for Spielberg, but for directors such as Martin Scorsese critical acclaim is not hardly synonymous for profit. In terms of recognition and prestige, perhaps Scorsese is a very successful director. But in terms of profits most of his films drew little dough at the box office. Luckily, two of his latest films The Departed and Gangs of New York have helped his finances some.

Nevertheless, Spielberg is and always will be the king of profit.
