The Walt Disney Company has the rights and royalties to The Lion King movies while Disney Theatrical Productions has the rights and royalities to The Lion King stage musical. I am not positively sure if the legal rights to the stage musical are currently available to theatre schools.
The rights for The Lion King have not been released for local theatres yet. My guess is they will not be released for another 5 years at least.
