Plastic was not invented during the Victorian era, but the first synthetic plastic, Bakelite, was created in 1907 by Leo Baekeland, after the Victorian period. However, the late 19th century did see the development of earlier forms of plastic, such as Parkesine in 1856, which is considered one of the first semi-synthetic plastics. Thus, while some foundational work on plastics occurred towards the end of the Victorian era, the invention of true plastics happened shortly afterward.
The Victorian era, which spanned from 1837 to 1901, saw the conceptual groundwork for computers laid primarily through the work of Charles Babbage. He designed the Analytical Engine in the 1830s, which is considered the first mechanical computer due to its ability to perform calculations automatically using programmed instructions. Although it was never completed during his lifetime, Babbage's ideas influenced future generations and the development of modern computers.
