Gangaputra was the son of the king Shantanu and the river goddess Ganga. He was also known as Devavrata and later was called Bhishma, one of the main characters in the Indian Epic Mahabharata.

Bhishma observed life-long celibacy with a vow to unselfishly safeguard the heirs of his brothers.
