Stephan doesn't hate Maleficent in the beginning of the movie. In fact, when he is told to kill Maleficent, he is unable to do it because he cares about her too much. Instead he cuts off her wings as evidence that she is dead. Maleficent can't forgive him for this, but more importantly Stephan is unable to forgive himself. Maleficent curses Stephan's child in an act of revenge. And Stephan's life falls apart. He banishes his daughter for 16 years to try and save her. He becomes so bitter, hateful, miserable, and unhappy because he is unable to ever see what true love really is. He blames Maleficent for this, even though she is the one who saves Aurora. He tries to kill Maleficent since he blames her for everything that is wrong with his life, even though it's not her fault, but his own.

King Stefan wanted to kill Maleficent primarily due to his desire for power and revenge after she cursed his daughter, Princess Aurora. He believed that eliminating Maleficent would not only protect his kingdom but also rid himself of a formidable adversary. Additionally, his actions were driven by a sense of betrayal, as Maleficent once showed him kindness, which he felt was overshadowed by her dark magic. Ultimately, his fear of her power and its potential threat to his reign fueled his decision to seek her destruction.

Maleficent's transformation into an evil figure is primarily rooted in betrayal and heartbreak. Initially, she was a kind and powerful fairy who fell in love with a human named Stefan. However, Stefan's ambition led him to betray her by stealing her wings to become king, which filled her with rage and a desire for revenge. This deep sense of betrayal ultimately turned her into the vengeful character known as Maleficent.
