Mathew Henson was an African American explorer most famous for assisting Robert Peary on his expeditions to the North Pole. He assisted Robert Peary's 1909 expedition in which the geographic North Pole was found. He was born in Maryland in 1866 and died in 1955. He was awarded many honors and several books/ movies have been produced about his life and expeditions.
