Michael Crawford for me. He loved playing the phantom and had so much emotion and power on stage, he had the whole audience--including the men-- in tears when I saw him in Vegas (I was only 12 and I cried for days!)... he can make this noise when he cries, a noise that really breaks your heart, I can't even describe what it was like and I have never heard a more agonizing sound...

Answer

Michael, i saw him in the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber tour when i was 5. i got to meet him too! i got to sit on his lap and i remember he called me his angel of music =) he's a sweet sweet man. Then later, when i was 9, mom took me to Vegas to see him in EFX! and i got his autograph at the stage door, after waiting 2 hours in line!! he's just... amazing...

lol and it was funny, at EFX, there were a bunch of giggling teenagers sitting in the front row using binoculars... binoculars! in the front row! this man has some crazy fan(girl)s =)

Answer:My analysis (I have seen them both live):

Howard--

His portrayal: He plays the Phantom INSANE! Almost like a Leroux type deal. He is amazing to watch in the final scenes. And he has an ANGEL voice! His Music of The Night is brilliant, best I've ever watched. At the end, after the kiss, he is broken and he plays it very sympathetic. Again, very Leroux-esque. He's also the longest-running phantom ever!

His voice: Okay, THIS is where I really love this guy! His singing is just astounding! Powerful, rich, my all time favorite voice.

Michael--

His portrayal: This guy plays it more softly. His Music of The Night is full of emotion, it's not like he's really performing for the audience, but singing to Christine. He plays The phantom very sensually as well. Actually, when he was in Vegas performing, he got "caught" being a little *too* risque in Point of No Return and was forced to tone it down so as not to make the ladies faint--which actually did happen a few times in London when I was there... ahem.

One thing I *love* about this guy is, he opened up all his emotions on stage and positioned himself in ways that most actors wouldn't ever dream of doing (I was taught in drama class that opening your legs to an audience was the most vulnerable position and just to not do it)... most actors will this avoid like the plague. I admire him for this. He just forgets about the audience and becomes his character.

I also agree with the first answer, that SOUND he makes when he's crying! It's incredible.

His voice: Incredible voice. Amazing to hear live. But just not my type, I guess.

So in the end I would have to chose Michael, even though I like Howard's voice more. But it really depends on what kind of Phantom you like.

Answer

Personally, Crawford. Believe me, he isn't even on my top 10, but McGillin-- when I saw him, I felt like getting the hell out of there around MoTN time. He just didn't click with me.

Who is the best phantom of the opera colm wilkinson Gerard butler howard mcgillin anthony crivello or michael crawford?

It depends of whom you want to listen to:Michael Crawford is the only one with the most awards for his singing, acting and a true mania for his performance as the Phantom for both London and Broadway. He played the role for 2½ years and over 1,300 performances, winning an Olivier Award (Best Actor in a Musical), a Tony Award (Best Performance By An Actor in a Lead Role, Musical), an N.Y's Drama Desk Award, and a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Distinguished Achievement in Theatre (Lead Performance) for his efforts. What I mean a true mania, scalping tickets for a $1000 a piece for Broadway alone. The tickets then were only $75 for the most pricier seats. Teenagers girls and as well as college girls would camp outside both London and Broadway for hours and hours before the show even started, chanting for Michael Crawford, saying they loved him. It was reported by various newspapers that these college girls were there as the earliest 5:00 A.M.During the run of Phantom in Los Angeles 1990, Crawford was asked to perform "The Music of the Night" at the Inaugural Gala for President George Bush in Washington, D.C., on 19 January 1989. At the gala, Crawford was presented with a birthday cake (it was his own 47th birthday). On 29 April 1991, three and a half years and over 1,300 performances into The Phantom of the Opera later, Crawford left the company. He admits to having been genuinely broken up at his own departure, and, during the Final Lair scene, altered the Phantom's line to "Christine....I loved you...", acknowledging that this was his last and final performance.Gerard Butler cannot sing and cannot act accordingly to most music critics from various music and art magazines, but a few teenage girls love him dearly.Colm Wilkinson He is the original Canadian cast is noted for the Point of No Return no one can topped his performance, is considered one of the definitive interpretations, as featured on compilation recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hits. His style has the doom feel without Christine, he has no desire to live.Howard McGillin is the longest Phantom on Broadway, he can still wow the audience with his view in bringing terror back into the Phantom. McGillin holds the record for the most performances by an actor in the title role of the musical The Phantom of the Opera (official title: "World's Longest Running Phantom") and was part of the musical when it became the longest-running production in Broadway history on January 9, 2006, and its twenty-first anniversary on January 26, 2009. McGillin played his last performance in the role on July 25, 2009, marking his 2,544th show.Antony Crivello Phantom: Las Vegas 2006 he has the beautiful upper register voice which means he can hold the highest notes the longest with perfect pitch.
